Transcaucasia or the South Caucasus - a region of 190 thousand square km, which is located on the border of Europe and Asia. It consists of three countries: Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
Transcaucasia has always played an important role in the history of mankind. The remains of a hominid 1.8 million years old were found in the village of Dmanisi in southern Georgia - today it is the oldest human ancestor discovered outside the African continent. It is attributed to the species Homo georgicus, which was not known until this find. Many scientists, on the basis of this, conclude that European civilization could begin to take shape precisely in the Transcaucasus.
The South Caucasus has always been at the center of world trade and politics because the Great Silk Road passed through it. On the territory of modern Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan the most ancient states were born - Urartu, Colchis, the Scythian Kingdom. Here the most ancient languages and foundations of modern religions were formed.
In the Middle Ages fierce battles for the region took place in the South Caucasus. The Golden Horde, the kingdom of Timur (Tamerlane), the Persian Empire, the Ottoman Empire claimed for territories rich in natural resources. Since the 19th century the countries of Transcaucasia have been part of the Russian Empire and subsequently the Soviet Union. Almost simultaneously in 1991 Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan withdrew from the USSR and became independent republics.
Now Transcaucasia is actively developing. Especially popular is tourism in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in the format of group tours. Tourists like to visit these countries because of the rich culture and history, magnificent nature, and hospitality of local residents. Relatively low prices within the countries of the Transcaucasus become a pleasant bonus for tourists.
