Not far from Baku is an interesting natural site, which is one of the main attractions of Azerbaijan. This is Yanardag Mountain, which in translation from Azerbaijan means "Burning Mountain". There are deposits of natural gas that comes to the surface and self-ignites - this amazing phenomenon does not depend on human participation and occurs continuously day and night.
From ancient times people worshiped the burning mountain of Yanardag and the power of fire, here were the cult centers of Zoroastrians. Thanks to the pilgrims the territory of modern Baku also developed: caravanserais, temples and sleeping places were built. Flame tongues bursting out from under the ground were described by the famous traveler of the 13th century Marco Polo - it was he who gave Azerbaijan the name "Land of Lights" that later became entrenched to him.
