During a tour of Azerbaijan it is worth visiting one of the country's oldest settlements - the city of Sheki.
The settlement was founded at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC. The main architectural structures that have survived to our time were built during the period of the Sheki Khanate - one of the strongest Azerbaijani khanates of the mid-17th - early 19th centuries. Due to the uniqueness of the buildings the entire old city of Sheki along with Khan's palace was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During a tour of the city of Sheki you should definitely visit the Sheki fortress, the main shopping street with caravanserais and artisan shops, mosques and baths. The most significant building is the Palace of Sheki Khans built at the end of the XVIII century. In the construction the most modern building technologies for that time and elements of folk applied art were used. The unique "shebeke" technique was used - windows with colored glass made of wood without glue and nails. The interior paintings are made by local and European masters and amaze the imagination. The palace of Sheki Khans is considered one of the pearls of the Islamic East.
