In the south of Armenia in a deep gorge is the cave city of Khndzoresk. It is mentioned in medieval chronicles, throughout the history of the city caves were used not only for living but also as shelters during wars. Dwellings were located at an altitude of 20-30 meters, people climbed there on the ropes. It is not surprising that such a city was difficult to capture - Khndzoresk is the only Armenian city that has never been occupied.
The population of the cave city Khndzoresk, which occupied an area of almost 3 km, was quite large - at the beginning of the 20th century there were about 8 thousand inhabitants, 1800 residential buildings, 27 shops and 7 schools.
Since the 50s of the 20th century Armenian authorities have begun to resettle people from the cave city in comfortable housing in neighboring villages. The last residents left the city about 60 years ago. Today no one lives in Khndzoresk. In 2012 a 160-meter-long suspension bridge was built, which allowed visiting Khndzoresk with excursions.
