Tatev Monastery is a pearl of Armenian architecture. In the Middle Age, it was the spiritual and educational center of Armenia; in the XIV century a large university was located on its territory. This historical monument is located in a picturesque area - the Syunik region.
Tatev Monastery was badly damaged by the earthquake in 1931, restoration work is still underway. But the main church of the Holy Apostles Paul and Peter, the Church of St. Gregory and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the fortress wall, and the ancient oil press are still accessible for excursions. Also here you can observe the unique work of medieval masters - the swinging pillar "gawazan", which warned the monks about an earthquake or the approach of enemies. Inside the temples are decorated with magnificent frescoes, which are made by medieval craftsmen.
It is not easy to get to Tatev Monastery - there are high mountains and impenetrable forests around. In 2010 the Wings of Tatev ropeway was opened, almost 6 km long, which is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest reversible ropeway, which moves without stops. Now the airway to the Tatev Monastery takes 12 minutes, during which tourists can admire the nature of the beautiful gorge.
