About an hour's drive from Yerevan is the Geghard Monastery, which is included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
This monastery was carved into the rock at the initiative of the baptist of Armenia Gregory the Illuminator. It was here that for many centuries the most important relic of the Christian world was stored - the tip of the spear of the Roman warrior Longinus, with which Jesus Christ was pierced on the cross (now the relic has been transferred to the Cathedral of Etchmiadzin).
The main buildings of the monastery were built in the XIII century by representatives of the noble Proshyan family. During an excursion to Geghard you can see their family signs, a water supply system and cells for monks. Around the monastery a large number of "khachqars" were collected - stone crosses with exquisite carvings, which the Armenians make in honor of important events.
