Khor Virap Monastery an hour's drive far from Yerevan played a huge role in the history of Armenia. It was built over an underground prison, where at the end of the 3rd century King Trdat III kept Christian Gregory the Illuminator for 15 years. With his sermons Gregory managed to soften the heart of the pagan and persuade him to accept Christianity. In 301, on the initiative of this king, all of Armenia adopted Christianity as the state religion and became the first Christian country in the world.
An excursion to the Khor Virap monastery allows you to see mountain Ararat in all its glory, to which, according to the Bible, the ark of Noah moored after the flood. The biblical mountain is almost at arm's length; it is clearly visible in any weather. And the boundless Armenian fields around perfectly complement this magnificent view.
