The Echmiadzin Cathedral, as well as the temples and the monastery complex located around it, are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was here, at the beginning of the IV century, the first Armenian Christian king, Trdat III, began to build a temple - in the place that Jesus Christ indicated to him. Construction continued for many centuries; murals and frescos were applied to the walls.
During an excursion to Etchmiadzin you can visit the treasury, where chronicles and ancient books are stored, as well as the Spear of Fate - the tip of the spear of the Roman Longinus, with whom Jesus was pierced on the cross. In addition the attention of tourists deserve the churches of St. Hripsime and St. Gayane.
Not far from Echmiadzin is the archaeological site of Zvartnots, which is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The temple was built in the 7th century on the site where Gregory the Illuminator met the Armenian king Trdat III - later this meeting led to the adoption of Christianity by Armenia.
At one time it was a large temple complex with baths, a winery and throne rooms. Unfortunately earthquakes in the Middle Ages severely damaged buildings.
However, thanks to the restoration work during the excursion to Zvartnots you can still enjoy the grandeur of its architecture.
