The monastery is located in eastern Georgia in the Kakheti region. Here the baptist of Georgia, Saint Nino, died in the 4th century. After her death, a crypt was built over the grave and soon a monastery was formed nearby.
In the XVII century, during the Persian invasion of Shah Abbas I, the monastery was destroyed and plundered, later it had to be restored, but the Holy body was not touched.
A convent was founded here since the 19th century and a school of needlework and painting was opened. The monastery is active, on its territory is the construction of a new large temple.
