The city of Gori is located 76 kilometers from Tbilisi. The settlement has been known since ancient times, but officially the city was founded by King David the Builder in the XII century. The well-preserved medieval fortress of Goristsikhe is located on the territory of the city, however, all other medieval buildings were destroyed during the strong earthquake in 1920.
The most important attraction of Gori is the house in which the future leader of the USSR Joseph Stalin (Dzhugashvili) was born in 1878. A small building, which was occupied by the Dzhugashvili family, was restored, and since 1937 a large memorial museum dedicated to Stalin began to be built nearby. In 1957 the museum was opened; it embodied the most striking features of Soviet architecture of that time - monumentalism, the use of architectural orders and bas-reliefs.
The museum contains Stalin's personal belongings, photographs and newspaper articles, during the tour they talk about his life and work. You can also view the inside of the armored carriage, which Stalin used to travel, including to attend the Tehran and Yalta conferences.
