The resort town of Borjomi is located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. On its territory there are springs of Borjomi mineral water, which it is recommended to use internally for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, metabolism, kidneys and also in the form of baths for cardiovascular diseases, diseases of the nervous system and respiratory organs.
The bottling of mineral water began at a time when Georgia became part of the Russian Empire (from the 19th century). In 1850 the first 1300 bottles of Borjomi were put up for sale and already in 1900 the production of Borjomi mineral water exceeded 1 million bottles a year and export to many countries of the world was established.
Borjomi resort was one of the favorite vacation spots of the Russian imperial family - the Romanov family owned a Moorish-style palace (since 2016 this building functions as a museum). Following the imperial example many close and great princes also built their residences in Borjomi.
At the same time, hydropathic institutions were founded in Borjomi, many of which are functioning as sanatoriums now. In addition, Borjomi mineral water is served in an open pump room in the city park - all visitors to the park during the tour of Borjomi can drink it without restrictions.
