In the 19th century the estate in the village of Tsinandali belonged to the noble Georgian family Chavchavadze. The princes of Chavchavadze were in good standing in the Russian Empire and made a great contribution to the Europeanization of Georgia. During the construction of the estate European technologies and architectural techniques were applied, a magnificent garden was planted around the house, gardeners were invited from England. Prince Alexander Chavchavadze was actively interested in winemaking and, in order to popularize Georgian wine, built the country's first factory for the production of bottled wines from local grapes. This wine is called “Tsinandali” and is still produced according to the recipe of that time.
Chavchavadze Manor was the center of the intellectual life of Georgia in the 19th century. Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Dumas Sr. visited here. The daughter of Alexander Chavchavadze Nino was married to the famous Russian writer and politician Alexander Griboedov.
Today you can take a tour of the Chavchavadze estate - see family heirlooms, take a walk in the beautiful garden and taste the famous Tsinandali wine in the historic cellar.
