In the west of the country, not far from the city of Kutaisi, is the Gelati Monastery, the cultural and educational center of Georgia in the Middle Ages.
The monastery was founded by King David the Builder in 1106 and here the great Georgian king was buried. At the monastery in the Middle Ages an academy and a school of painting were founded, which were considered advanced for that time. The academy studied philosophy, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, grammar, history, music.
The Gelati Monastery complex consists of the Nativity Cathedral, the Church of St. George, the Church of St. Nicholas, the building of the Gelati Academy, the monastery gate with the grave of David the Builder. Of particular interest are the frescoes inside the temples with images of the great kings of Georgia, which have a portrait resemblance.
Gelati Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
