Near the city of Gori is one of the oldest cities in Georgia - the cave city of Uplistsikhe. It was founded in the Bronze Age, was actively used in the Middle Ages and was left by people only at the end of the XIX century.
During its heyday Uplistsikhe numbered more than 700 caves, most of which were destroyed by earthquakes, rain and wind. Now about 150 caves have been preserved, some of them have preserved architectural elements - for example, caissons.
During the tour of Uplistsikhe you can see medieval pit-prisons, reception halls, residential caves, a pharmacy, as well as the early Christian Uplistsukli church (X-XI century).
In 2000 the restoration of Uplistsikhe was carried out. Now this historical attraction of Georgia is equipped for excursions and illuminated.
