Ottoman fortress Rabat
The Ottoman fortress of Rabat is located in the south of Georgia in the city of Akhaltsikhe. In 2012 its large-scale reconstruction was completed and now on the territory of this excursion object you can learn about the period of the 250-year Ottoman occupation of the south of Georgia (from the 16th to the 18th centuries).
Rabat fortress was founded by the Ottoman Turks during the occupation. During the reconstruction the main buildings of that time were restored: a mosque, baths, a citadel, the walls of the fortress. The main streets of the fortress and the facades of buildings were also repaired.
The museum, which is located on the territory of the fortress, deserves special attention - it contains unique archaeological artifacts from all over Georgia, which tell not only about the period of the Ottoman occupation but also about the history of the country as a whole.
